Mauritius is the country of origin of 6 of
the world's 10 most rare philatelic jewels
including the most valuable of them all: the
Bordeaux Cover.
Mauritius is the only place in the universe
where the most valuable stamps in the world:
the unused One Penny Orange Red and the Two
Pence Indigo Blue, issued in 1847, can be
seen side by side. This stamp issue, the first
of any British colony, were designed and printed
in Mauritius. They were mostly used on the
invitation to the legendary ball given by
the governor's wife, Lady Gomm. The ball was
held in the two-storey timber building now
fronting Government House in Port Louis.
